I’m back, guys! I know this is the third “I’m back” letter you’ve gotten, but it’s for real this time! 2021, as we know, started with a bang and it has certainly taken some time for me to find my footing. There’s so much for me to break down and discuss, from Disney Channel feuds I care WAY too much about (Team Olivia xoxo), the royals still giving that poor Black girl hell for no reason, and a Sex and the City revival (whether we need it or not, just admit that most of us will be watching.) But what’s taken over not only my mind but truly my entire life, is the dreamy and truly unbelievable HBO Max.
Like many of you, I spent much of last year streaming, streaming, streaming and it looks like this year will be much of the same. Between Bravo (I’ll get to that later), WandaVision (it’s a 10/10 for me, honey), a Buffy rewatch with my boyfriend and Drag Race (it’s truly Symone’s world and we’re all just living in it), all I do is watch TV and I’m okay with that. But what about the shows you *binge* in between? Be it a comfort show to fall asleep to, or a new series to obsess over, I’ve had to face the facts and realize my biggest emotional support comes from my Amazon Fire Stick.
“Less love at first sight and more a brooding slow burn crush, “Maxy” has a catalogue so impressive and an interface so satisfying, I can’t give myself to anyone else at the moment.”
While many of my “streaming lovers” have fought for my attention this past year, no one has won me over like HBO Max has. Less love at first sight and more a brooding slow burn crush, “Maxy” has a catalogue so impressive and an interface so satisfying, I can’t give myself to anyone else at the moment. I realize this sounds like it’s all about looks and aesthetics, but I’m a Gemini, what do you want?
For starters, Mr. Max boldly declared purple as his signature color. While Netflix has owned Taylor Swift’s Red for years and Hulu certainly hasn’t had it easy being green, my man truly understood the challenge and burst through with the color of royalty.
I understand the roll out for HBO Max was messy (What’s Max? But I already pay for HBO Now? Does HBO Go still exist? etc.), but we need to recognize how they’ve been able to rebound, especially now that they’re offering exclusive releases of their theatrically released films. WW84 was...interesting, but there’s no doubt HBO Max successfully created a movie event with the Christmas release, and it seems like they’re gearing up for a successful splash into award season with Judas and the Black Messiah next week.
I haven’t even gotten to the nostalgic content that I can’t stop consuming. I’m currently diving into Batman: The Animated Series at night (which I’m pretty sure I haven’t watched since I was 7) and just started one of the only shows from The WB I’ve never watched, Everwood. Not to mention all of the HBO shows I watch week to week anyway that are available on that little purple app as well.
There’s also an incredible film collection, all the Cartoon Network you can handle, Studio Ghibli and more. And like a perfect little cherry on top, Max is now giving streaming recommendations based on your sun sign! Desperate? I don’t care! HBO Max is giving me attention and tending to my needs - my king!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still drawn to my old flames (As I mentioned, I’m streaming Buffy on Prime and of course had to check out Bling Empire) but HBO Max is still my number one. The rest of you...get to work!
